Last month, through the Playa Cativo Lodge Research and Conservation Program (PIC-PCL), our staff received training to review the current regulation and to deepen their knowledge of the ecology of species found in the Golfo Dulce, such as the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), the spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), and the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). The training also included an analysis of the global threats faced by cetaceans: acoustic pollution, vessel strikes, climate change, and habitat loss. In this way, our staff not only complies with the law but also understands the ecological context that makes protecting these animals urgent.
Costa Rica is one of the few countries in the world, and the only one in Central America, with a specific legal framework for these activities. This regulation, enacted in 2005 and revised in 2023, sets minimum distances, maximum speeds, and safety protocols to ensure that every encounter with whales and dolphins is safe, sustainable, and enriching. The Playa Cativo Lodge team not only knows these rules but applies them rigorously on every trip to the sea.
Unlike a simple code of conduct, which serves as a voluntary guideline in many countries where whale watching tourism takes place, having a formal law means there are clear, mandatory rules backed by the State. In Costa Rica, the Regulation for the Operation of Activities Related to Cetaceans (N.º 32495) not only guides best practices but also establishes responsibilities and consequences for non-compliance. For the hotel, this represents an institutional commitment: ensuring that every excursion meets legal and environmental standards. For guests, it provides peace of mind, knowing that their experience takes place within a framework that protects both wildlife and people, guaranteeing responsible encounters with marine life.
